Michael O’Donnell studied composition at the University of Western Sydney (now Western Sydney University), and at Concordia University, Montreal. After completing his Bachelor in 2012 he moved to Sydney where he has been performing professionally on violin and viola in various jazz, folk and classical settings. His gypsy swing band The Squeezebox Trio, has seen him perform his own compositions all over Australia, and recently a 25-stint tour of New Zealand on the strength of their debut album.

Michael also runs and writes for his own Pickpockets & Rascals orchestra, a 20 piece orchestra who play rock, jazz, world, folk and rap/hip-hop, with some of Sydney and Melbourne’s finest singer-songwriters. They perform twice annually at The Basement.

He also writes for film and stage, having recently completing a commission for the Ben Johnson's “Bartholomew Fair” for a short season in May 2015, and composed/arranged the music for Croatian cabaret “ Wild Violet” for a feature performance at the Melbourne Cabaret Fringe Festival, and winner of the Best Music Award in the Sydney Fringe Festival in 2015.

Finally, Michael enjoys composing for school orchestras between Sydney and Brisbane, utilising his performance experience to write energetic pieces for string orchestras, concert bands and solo pieces. His pieces are sure to include jazz and swing elements, improvisation, gypsy and even flamenco techniques and expression, even for players of young ages.
